Speeding Kills ?

Hmm.. Just tried to find more correlation between speed and accident rates.

This is taken off U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration.

The results of the study indicated that lowering posted speed limits by as much as 20 mi/h (32 km/h), or raising speed limits by as much as 15 mi/h (24 km/h) had little effect on motorist' speed. The majority of motorist did not drive 5 mi/h (8 km/h) above the posted speed limits when speed limits were raised, nor did they reduce their speed by 5 or 10 mi/h (8 or 16 km/h) when speed limits are lowered. Data collected at the study sites indicated that the majority of speed limits are posed below the average speed of traffic. Lowering speed limits below the 50th percentile does not reduce accidents, but does significantly increase driver violations of the speed limit. Conversely, raising the posted speed limits did not increase speeds or accidents.

Or you can just get a whole list of information and research in this area from Speed Related Argument Database

Nice one. You're right though, speeding doesn't kill. Inattention kills. Not recognizing one's own limitation/skill kills.

Driver attitude towards the road kills.

But i guess road rules can't be tailored for each individual. The authorities have to make do as best as they can with general assumptions... that when a driver is going too far over the speed which the road is designed to handle, he/she has a higher likelihood of committing those other follies at the same time.

Yes, laws are meant to be a "blanket" rule. But it is the common-sensibility of law-enforcement officers to make the judgement.

Of course, setting speed limits (and I still think 90km/h is still too slow) has to be done. But don't just make speeding an obsession.

Also not good if it induces false sense of security. Like the recent few crusade over the festive season. More ppl caught speeding, thus more people driving dangerously ?

Or people have been speeding all along, and just because they have bought more cameras.

Like many research has shown, majority drives at the speed appropriate to the conditions. Even if it is above legal speed limit.

Haha yeah, not that they bought more cameras, because i haven't actually seen that many flashy things on the road, just police cars aplenty. But it's festive season, so the cops are ALL out on a campaign (sounds familiar huh?) to crack down on anyone who decides to ignore the warning of death.

Hmm. haven't you been keeping up with their news ? Late last year, they have bought several laser-based mobile speed camera.

Which explains why they are hiding behind bushes, on pedestrain overhead bridges, to nap speedsters.
